A very familiar passage is found in the gospel of John, where Jesus was explaining to a man named Nicodemus about the process of being born again. He says in John 3:16-17, “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.” (NLT)
This teaching of Jesus sums up God’s purpose, plans, and character. The reason behind all that God does now and has ever done and will ever do is LOVE. Love is often the driving force behind some pretty out-of-this-world behavior. When you think about how Jesus came into the world, it is quite fantastic.
God chose a young girl named Mary, sending an angel to both her and her fiancé, with a plan that Mary, a virgin, would become pregnant and give birth to the Savior of the World, the long-promised Messiah, the Son of God himself. This kind of love could have/should have, stopped the world in its tracks and turned all hearts towards such a creative display of love.
This last week a video went viral on social media of a man in Texas who, with the help of friends, shut down a major highway in order to propose to his girlfriend. She said “yes” and he was charged with a class B misdemeanor for obstructing traffic. But, love can make any one of us do some foolish things!
When Ted and I were dating he worked at a mill some 40 miles from where I lived. He’d work all day and then drive to my house where we would stay up together all night, just because we had missed each other so much in those 10 hours he’d been away. He’d then return to work the next morning, sleepless, driving 40 miles to get to work, just to do it again the next night. But, love can make any one of us do some crazy things!
I labored with my first child for 31 hours, through extreme exhaustion and pain (natural childbirth all the way for me) I gave birth to my daughter. I then turned around and had 2 more kids. But, love can make any one of us do some outrageous things!
My point: God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. Love can even make God do some pretty extreme things. Why? Because God So Loved!
We celebrate this season of Christmas and can sometimes be distracted and forget to focus on what is important. Let’s not forget that Christmas is about giving – God giving his Son to bring us life. Christmas is about hope, preparation, joy – and most importantly LOVE!
